Last evening I was able to catch the fast-moving Gianpaolo Paglia
for a drink at Veritas, before he had to leave for another city on his US tour. This rising star of the Maremma has been given some excellent publicity in the latest Wine Spectator. And last night he shared some of the joys and frustrations of gaining awareness and buy-in on these shores.

Meanwhile, see this very timely comment by the Italian Wine Guy on Mr. Paglia and his constant efforts to raise the profile of his wine in the US even with very good WS scores. "I really have disdain for that accepted custom of scoring. If it’s so successful, then why is the owner of Poggio Argenteria having to double schlep through the U.S. while his grapes bubble back at home in the Maremma? Wine at one-third the cost of Ornellaia and with a higher score, yet he is beating the street. Hmm…." For more, go here.
