So, if I'm "reading" this correctly, everyone at the table exclaimed about and loved the Ornellaia '97 (a great year in Tuscany), except for you, but "fortunately the port was fantastic."

Si. To me it was too green and vegetal tasting, like drinking raw string beans.

No doubt it was just me.

And while I'm not a fan of Supertuscans, I was prepared to like the stuff -- to be amazed and humbled, in fact. Sadly, no...

Not meaning to dis your friend Warren or his generosity or his wine, but that doesn't sound right. A bit of bell pepper, perhaps, black olive, cedar, tobacco, but not green beans. Reviews of the wine since the late '90s and into the 21st century imply that this should have been a celetial experience. Too bad.

Bell peppers were dominant, actually.

Green beans -- well, no, not so much. The others loved the stuff, so the fault was not in the bottle but in myself.

What were you eating with the Ornellaia?
You mentioned "pasta", but no further details on the sauce. Did you have a meat main course?
Beside Ken, how much "wine experts" were your companions?
How long has it been opened before you sipped it? (did you use a decanter?).

Terry - Mi sembra strano. Raffaella ed io abbiamo bevuto un '97 pocchi giorni fa (non la prima volta di questa annata). Il 96 non era gran'che pero' il 97 e 98 erano ottimi con struttura complessa, giusto pieno e avvolgente.

Forse la bottiglia ha preso caldo?

The bottle was opened about an hour and a half before we drank it. It was served at decent room temperature (a cool evening in NY and actually a little chilly in the restaurant). It had been stored in a cool dark place for years until that evening. (The purchaser was a surgeon friend of Warren's, who is a serious and avid wine collector and drinker.)

The pasta was served in a light tomato sauce with a bit of cream, a rich savory veal sauce that I would have thought would be perfect with such a wine.

I really think it was a matter of taste -- it struck me wrong, but everyone else raved about it. The wine certainly did not match my expectations for a well-knit, well-structured wine, it was more like drinking a Chateau d'Arcins or something.

Per la cronaca, corkage fee in Italiano si dice "diritto di tappo". Un termine morto, visto che in Italia non lo mette in pratica nessuno. Cioè, haimè, nessuno porta la propria bottiglia al ristorante.
