My mad friend, Adriano Liloni, tells me that his Trattoria Pegaso has made it into the Gambero Rosso with two gamberi ("two out of three ain't bad"). Better yet for Americans traveling under the burden of a cut-rate dollar, Adriano's fantastic place has won, for the second year in a row, the designation of one of the "best quality/price ratios" in Italy.
If you're going to the Lake Garda area or anywhere near Verona, make the detour to Trattoria Pegaso. Not only will the food be sensational, but you'll have a great time. Adriano is a fabled host.
Adriano doesn't take well to criticism, however...
But seriously, folks, it's a whole lot of fun to eat there. You go and stay and five hours later you wonder where the time went.
(I received no remuneration for this plug. Done out of friendship and respect for amazing work. Auguri, Adriano.)

talking about italian lakes and wines, i suggest lago maggiore and most of all lago d'orta, a beautiful place in north west italy. and don't forget that lago d'orta is a few miles from Gattinara and Ghemme (or the very small Boca), homeland of an unknown but still nice red wine (very different from the ones from south piemonte).
ciao!
