After a long and miserable day yesterday, I came home to find a package. I thought it was a CD of 3 versions of the Maltese Falcon, which I had ordered after a rave review in the Times. (Troubling thought: was it a review or a product placement? Oh who cares.)
Speaking of the Times, I was sorry to see that R. W. Apple had died. His family was sort of a neighbor of mine when I lived in Akron, Ohio (short version: we had a great house, wished it hadn't been located there). Apple was always an engaging, interesting, insightful writer. the Times will be a lot less rich without him.
Anyway, it was a heavy package. "Wine?" I thought. "WINE?" Wine indeed. Two bottles of the mythical Albino Armani foja tonda, which ran its inanimate gauntlet to the U. S. of A. to find its way to my humble abode. The terrorists didn't win this time. I'll open and report later this weekend. Eager to try this "new" variety.

Dear Terry,
I'm glad to be the first to wish a happy birthday to your blog and I enclose also a "cin cin" with Foja tonda.
