I've been good about staying on topic -- wine stuff and so forth. But tonight I've drunk a lot of wine and had a nice time with friends, and I feel like being an off-topic fool. For I am what I am, etc.
So here are a few Andy Rooneyish non sequiturs...
1. To Vinitaly in 16 hours or whatever it is. The iPod is fully charged. The Italian cell phones are fully charged. The Blackberrys are fully charged. I, ladies and gentlemen, may not be fully charged. Full of ripasso though. Haven't packed, however. I laugh at your middle-class preoccupation with packing.
2. Modern life: you spend most of your time packing and arranging chargers for the iPods, cell phones, etc. And when you get to a hotel you don't first hang up your clothes. You charge your iPod, cell phone, Blackberry, and your laptop.
3. I hear from AC that Banfi has been cleared of all wrong-doing in the Brunello rave-down. Time will tell. What will the German, Swiss, Dutch and Belgian courts rule? There seems to be a huge amount of interest in the scandal in those countries, which had been dubbed by the Italian press, "Brunellopoli."
4. Vinitaly cries out for a functional theme song. I believe I have it: Download 99_luft_balloons.mp3
5. Ah the audacity of hope. Good on yer. Now, for a personal theme song, composed and performed especially for the occasion: Download dirty_deeds_done_dirt_cheap.mp3
6. It's late but...Download 01_beds_are_burning.mp3
7. March isn't quite over but the site traffic and page views are awesome. Thanks in no small measure to Tom of Fermentation. Download 03_some_kinda_love.m4a

Brunellogate?

-opoli is the equivalent Italian suffix to -gate.
I believe it originated about 20 years ago when "kickback city" (tangentopoli) was the phrase that summed up all the unseemly suckling at the public teat.

Calligraphy is one of the old part of the human culture. It has been brushing up together with handwriting. It is characterized by the eternal striving for perfection. The art of handwriting both ancient and contemporary, its aesthetic distinctiveness should be taken tremblingly, with reverence.
But alas… a typewriter, computer, communicator… The mankind is steadily going away from the "handmade speech", that's is the words written on parchment, elm, paper or on turns. The scientific articles, novels, verses and love letters, all these we type on the keyboard.
But things are not too bad! Recently there was initiated a new project "International Calligraphic Exhibitoin". Its main goal is to form beautiful and healthy society through the art of calligraphy. The exhibition will be opened on Seprember 16th at the St.Petersburg State Academic Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture n.a. I.E. Repin. One of the mottos of the International Calligraphic Exhibition: Calligraphy is the written beauty of feelings.
The framework of the exhibition will include the works of the famous calligraphers from Russia, Belarus, Ukraine. To clearly understand the flexibility of calligraphy there will be organized a special exposition of the calligraphic schools of Europe, Baltic states, USA, Israel, China, Japan, Cyria and UAE.
The exhibition will also include the museum exposition displaying the historical manuscripts of different centuries. Children and their parents, and all the comers will take pleasure of the calligraphic lessons and interesting lectures, while the professionals will take the opportunity to brush up their skills at the master-classes.
On May 14th at 2 pm there will be organized the presentation of the International Calligraphic Exhibition at Crocus Expo. At the presentation one will see a part of the pearls of the calligraphic gallery, which continuously is added by new works and authors.

P.S.: I would add for myself: undoubtedly, they do the right deal. Russia has always been living with fervor. The least I can do for the exhibition, in which I trust and believe it is right and necessary is to present this beautiful art to the wide audience, to you, dear forum participants. I would be grateful if the art of calligraphy awaken interest and a drop of enthusiasm.

Do you think that Obama is going to win because the Republicans have such a bad candidate?
Why did John McCain make his final argument against Obama... coal?
That's his closing argument? William Ayers, Rev. Wright, spreading the wealth, Born Alive, meeting dictators without preconditions, etc. all have to take a back seat so that McCain can go to Colorado and New Mexico to talk about coal? Does this more or less explain why he's going to get his clock cleaned Tuesday?
