I'm starting to think that if you want to eat very well and not for exhorbitant prices in Verona, you need to go to a place run by Southerners, that is, people from Campania. At La Bufalina, in a place near Verona called Marano, you find excellent Neapolitan pizzas and truly wonderful frutto di mare that normally can be found only when you travel to the land of beauteous seacoasts and mounds of split garbage bags. Ah Napoli!
I just had a seafood soup that was really a huge platter of every type of shellfish and octopus and cuttlefish (seppia) in a shallow broth of olive oil and the juices of said sea creatures. I felt transported to Naples. I even had a dessert by Sal De Riso, the most famous pasticciere in Italy, whose fresh desserts I first encountered at Osteria Reale, in Tramonti, which is also home to De Riso's "laboratory", where he concocts new sweets.
I can't give more specific info right now, nor a link. But if you come to Verona and tire of horse and donkey meat, consider this outpost of hearty Campanian cooking...pizza and fish/seafood. It's reasonably priced too. If you get to this place, which is in a strip mall (they have them here too), ask for Angelo. He's a real character, and he knows all about everything they serve, food or beverage.

Terry,
I can only but agree !
The quality/price ratio is excellent and the place is well frequented.
Last time there I've noticed a small group of chaps from Manhattan...
They where complaining about a friend of them, called Daphne, but I did not understand why they were so furious at her.
ciao
alex
p.s. - don't you like the "pastissada de caval" ? (litterally: messy horse meat)
This sort of paprika free Goulash is supposed to be the best food from Verona area.

I keep telling you to go further south. So what if your hotel points work there. If you think Campania has good food, keep driving on the Autostrada and then put your car on a train and cross the Straits of Messina. You might even see Morgan Le Fey.

Alex, thanks for calling us chaps, makes us seem more genteel somehow.
If that horse stew is the best Verona can offer, all I can say is, I pity you.
Marco, a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. Napoli tomorrow. Not sure when I'll get to Sicily unfortunately. I have always wanted to go there, mainly to see if they all really do look like Alfonso Cevola.

It's true, all Sicilians look alike. Even the ones with red hair and blues eyes. Sing "Mare Chiaro" for me when in Napoli.
