I admit that the current turmoil in the world economy seems to make wine blogging sink into insignificance. The most momentous US election since 1932 does its part too.
Plus, to be honest, I haven't been going to cool restaurants and drinking amazing new wines. Not enough cash. Not prudent to spend a coupla hundred bucks for a nice if not great meal. So like many others we stay home, eat ordianry old crap and drink plonk. Hell, I'm so uninspired I went to a wine luncheon yesterday and couldn't drink even the small pours that were on offer. The wines were OK, not awful, not good either. Mostly not good value except, ironically, a pleasing, unoaked Tuscan chardonnay that's said to sell for 9 bucks retail. This large producer has wide distribution, so they'll sell many containers of the stuff and it will give them decent cashflow as people cut back on their marquee brands.
Wow. Once I'd have been so much more enthusiastic and easier to please. Three years of wine blogging have exacted their toll. And it changes your perspective utterly when you're In The Business. Yes, finally, I shall soon make an announcement - the official debut of our hand-picked wines from Italy in the American market. I've written about many of the producers on this blog; soon any tasting notes, reviews and such will be on the company site. We will also start a blog about them and some of our less discouraging tales of selling them in these jittery times.
I will tell you now that we have a deep appreciation for the small-production, organic to biodynamic wineries of Italy, most of them very far from the beaten paths. Terroir-driven, local grapes, judicious use of oak, clean and free of endless "enhancement" in the cellar. And not excessively high in price -- most should sell for roughly 15-25 dollars at retail. Some less and just a few more.
So all this suggests yet another reason for having a mild case wof wine-blog blahs.
Bear with me, Dear Reader.
