The lizards -- lucertole -- are like kittens. Cute, little, darting around. There's one here at Osteria Reale in Tramonti that rules a few meters of a concrete wall, subtly changing colors with the vegetation and the intensity of the sun. He has this pattern of little spots on his back. He has that raptor raptness, as much feline and serpentine, and I saw him gulp down a very large fly, lick his scaly little chops and sit all attention for the next chump.
There's nothing like dolce far niente to make you observant, I suppose. You're not in a rush, you've eaten well and drunk just enough to feel easy and relaxed. The day is warm and the view is spectacular.
Si e' molto contenti. Ma molto.

One of the things we miss most of Italy! I was watering a potted plant with the hose one day on a windowsill and a lucertola was on the edge of the pot a foot from my eyes and reached out a tiny little tongue to drink from the small spray coming out of edge of the stream. Ah, the little things!
PS I hoped it was vernaccia you were drinking in Tuscany after what you have said about them in the past. Hopefully the vermentino was from up around the Candia zone?
