MERRY CHRISTMAS vs. HAPPY CHRISTMAS
La divisione fra l'America e la Gran Bretagna si esprime chiaramente con il modo di augurarsi a Natale. In USA si dice sempre "Merry Christmas", nel Regno Unito di solito "Happy Christmas." Significato uguale -- merry = allegro, e in questo contesto anche happy = allegro eppure felice. Il tono e' forse un po' diverso -- merry sarebbe piuttosto arcaico.
Per rendersi inoffensivi va detto spesso "Happy Holidays" (Buone Feste) e sui Christmas cards il saluto scialbo "Season's Greetings" (Saluti Stagionali -- ugh) accettabile per tutti, cristiani e no.
For the tongue-tied, I always liked just "auguri".
